Getting started with an exercise program can be challenging, either through physical ability, time, cost or other.
We want to provide the motivation to get you started with the simplest of challenges…get out and walk.

No matter what you age or ability, walking is a physical activity almost everyone can partake in.  For those with disabilities, we encourage you to walk or participate however you are able.

Getting into a regular routine is sometimes the hardest part. Studies have shown it takes 21-30 days to develop a particular habit and at least 4 weeks to get into a regular exercise routine.

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, manage weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier.

KidSport provide grants of $200 - $300 per child to help cover the costs of registration fees so that all kids aged 18 and under in Hamilton can play a season of sport.

Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers

Physical activity, such as walking, is important for weight control because it helps you burn calories. If you add 30 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories a day. Of course, the more you walk and the quicker your pace, the more calories you'll burn

Weigh the Math

You can estimate about 3,300-3,500 steps as a good proxy for 30 minutes of walking.

Generally, 1.6 km or 1 mile (roughly 2,000 steps) walked equates to [burning] about 100 calories, so in a 30-minute walk you will burn about 175 calories. There are 3,500 calories in 1 pound,

 In a month, you will burn 5,250 calories or approximately 1.5 pounds. In a year, that’s 18 lbs!

Increase your daily walk to 60 minutes and you could lose almost 40 lbs!
