Welcome to Kumanomori Martial Arts
Kumanomori is dedicated to inspiring and developing excellence in the sport and practice of Karate.
We are affiliated with the Seiwa Kai Canada and the worldwide Seiwa Kai organization.
Our core style of instruction is Goju Ryu, one of the four main styles of karate practiced in the world today.
Students also learn supplemental judo techniques, weapons and grappling techniques.
Whether you practice at a recreational or competitive level, our program corresponds to World Karate Federation (WKF) standards.
We are proudly Hamilton’s first dojo that practices karate in association with the provincial sport organization Karate Ontario.
This means if you like to compete and qualify at provincial and national competitions, you could represent Canada at International competitions
such as the Pan Am Games and the WKF World Championships. Now that karate is approved as an Olympic Sport, this too would be an option for you.
The practice of Karate is divided into three basic areas: Kata, Bunkai and Kumite.
Kata is a prearranged set of movements that represent the principals of a variety of defensive techniques.
Bunkai literally means “break apart” and “analyse”. In Bunkai, we practice what the movements of the Kata actually mean, in terms of self-defence.
Kumite is translated as Sparring. It was developed in order to practice real life fighting as closely as possible, without injuring your partner.
From these basic areas, students branch out learning Judo(take-downs; grappling, hidden applications in katas); Kobudo(Weapons) and in-depth self defence techniques.
