The Hamilton Seekers Volleyball Club began in 1978 as the St. Margaret Mary Volleyball Club. Although the club existed for ten years before this time, 1978 was the first year of our membership in the Ontario Volleyball Association. This was the year we began competing with teams from across Ontario and throughout Canada. At the time, Hamilton had an excellent club for boys teams, Hamilton Slovenia Club, and the time was ripe for a club for dedicated female athletes. Throughout our history, we have provided teams for girls from grades seven to thirteen.
In the spring of 1984, we won our first Canadian Championship. By this time, we had moved from our gym at St. Margaret Mary School and felt it was time for a name which would eventually be recognized as a club from the City of Hamilton. By this time, players were coming to us from across the region. After receiving eighty-four name suggestions, we decided upon a name unique to volleyball at the time, The Hamilton Seekers.
As the sport of volleyball became more widely known in our area, in part due to the success of the Seekers teams, the local media welcomed us with open arms and gave us generous and supportive coverage. Although so many announcers and reporters covered our teams, we feel it's appropriate to mention the support of Al Craig and Bill Sturrup from CHML radio as well as Ken Welch and Steve Ruddick from CHCH television. Many sports writers from the Brabant papers (Mountain News, Stoney Creek News) as well as from The Hamilton Spectator, carried our results regularly. We'd also like to mention Cecilia Carter Smith who has continued her interest in our graduates through her columns in the Spectator. This not only provided a lot of motivation for our players, but encouraged many good athletes from the area to consider being part of our program. Of course, we'd also like to thank Brian Lawlor for his many years of service as our Seekers media contact.
We are also appreciative of the support we've received from the Hamilton District Separate School board for allowing us to conduct our practices in their gyms. Over the years, we have trained at St. Margaret Mary School, St. Cecilia, St. Daniel and finally, the St. Charles Adult Education Centre.
A final thanks goes to Beverley Cadieux who has done so much to support us through her work at N.C. Pestill and presently at Commercial Digital Print in Stoney Creek. Bev continues to support our summer camps each year.
After twenty-six years, we decided to move away from coaching competitive teams. We stopped bringing in new players but continued to coach until the last players finished their time with us. In our last season, we were down to two players who trained four days each week with our five club coaches. They both achieved their goal of obtaining a scholarship to play in the NCAA Division 1. Even without a team to play for, they were scouted and offered full scholarships for their university years. What an appropriate end to so many years of club volleyball.
Now, our coaching is limited to summer camps and clinics but these are continued with passion.
