Sad News: Doug Harrison, Co-Founder of Transway Girls Basketball Club & Former SportHamilton Board Member

With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of Doug Harrison on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the age of 83. Doug's journey was one of love, dedication, and boundless passion, woven deeply into the fabric of family, friendship, and sportsmanship. He leaves behind his cherished wife of nearly 60 years, Chris, who stood by his side through every joy and challenge. Doug was the beloved father of Vicky, Kathy, and Matt (Tina), and the proud grandfather of DJ and Jayden, who brought immense joy to his life.

Doug's love for sports and his competitive spirit was ignited from an early age alongside his brother Roy. Whether badminton, golf, table tennis or basketball, Doug's competitive spirit shone brightly, leaving lasting memories for all who played with or against him. His dedication extended beyond the realm of personal enjoyment, as he co-founded Transway Girls Basketball in 1979 during his 40-year tenure at Stelco. This initiative flourished into a powerhouse within the province, a testament to Doug's vision and commitment.

Beyond his accomplishments, Doug's true legacy lies in the lives he touched. His warmth, guidance, and unwavering support left an indelible mark on countless individuals, shaping futures and inspiring dreams. As we reflect on his remarkable journey, let us carry forward his spirit of camaraderie, resilience, and generosity. Though Doug may have departed from our midst, the echoes of his influence will continue to resonate, spreading far beyond his wildest dreams.

Visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton on Friday, March 22nd from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday, March 23rd from 1-5 p.m. Funeral Service will take place on Sunday, March 24th at St Paul's United Church 42 Tragina Avenue, Hamilton.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Early May- details to follow
