Dr. Gene Sutton Club Youth Leadership Award

Dr. Sutton was a true Champion of Sport for All in the many roles she took on as a high school teacher, university and college professor, gymnastics coach, gymnastics official, Canadian Olympic Committee member, Canada Chef de Mission, Gymnastic Canada, Ontario Gymnastics, President of SportHamilton, Ontario Olympic Youth Academy, International Children’s Games etc.

Gene joined the SportHamilton Board of Directors in 2001 and became President that year until her passing in August 2009.

Dr. Gene Sutton was inducted into the Hamilton Hall of Distinction 2006, Citizen of the Year 2009 the Hamilton Sports Banner Series in 2009. and passed away suddenly in 2009.

Doc was a true believer in the value and benefits of participating in high school sport. She believed that sport allowed student-athletes with a positive attitude to be challenged and to strive for excellence, to be the best they could be and they could be encouraging role models to others in the process.

It is due to the work of Dr. Gene Sutton over many years that Hamilton was named a TRUE SPORTS COMMUNITY IN CANADA.

Award Criteria

This award is presented to a high school student, in grade 10 or 11, male or female who is extensively involved in high school life, extracurricular activities, athletics or intramurals, who contributes in a voluntary capacity in the school and /or out of school, exemplifies the values and believes of Dr. Gene Sutton and the core principles of TRUE SPORT:

Rise to the challenge - always strive for excellence. Discover how good you can be.

Play Fair

Play honestly - obey both the letter and spirit of the rules. Winning is only meaningful when the competition is fair.
Respect Others
Show respect for everyone involved in creating your sporting experience, both on and off the field. Win with dignity and lose with grace.

Keep it Fun

Find the joy of the sport. Keep a positive attitude both on and off the field.

Stay Healthy

Place physical and mental health above all other considerations - avoid unsafe activities. Respect your body and keep in shape.
Include Everyone
Share sport with others. Ensure everyone has a place to play.

Give Back

Find ways to show your appreciation for the community that supports your sport and helps make it possible.
